Senator Pritchard’s position with reference to the Crurapacker bill, which looks to the reduction of representation in the South, is commendable. Senator Pritchard has announced that he will oppose the bill, although he goes out of the way to interject a variety of useless comments about “unfair elections” in the South. As a matter of course Senator Pritchard’s position is not an en tirely disinterested one. He is anxious to have the constitutional amendment overthrown and be fieves (at least, professes to) that he will win in the courts. It can be seen at a glance what a disad vantage the bill would work to his party in this State. But granting this we feel that Senator Pritchard has considered justice before party in this matter and has decided to throw his vote and influence against the iniquitous Crumpacker measure. For thi- we give him credit and congratu late him. MAYOR JONES’ NERVE. Mayor Jones, of Toledo, Ohio, who has for the past four years been a prominent figure in Ameri can politics, on account as well of his eccentricity as of his popular! ty, has written a letter in which he expresses his disapprobation oi the attempt to secure a rerenact- ment of the Chinese exclusion act. Mayop Jones concludes his epistle as follows: “If the nation that has boasted of being ‘the birthplace of free- d m’ is to prove its worthiness to bo free, it must extend the same liberty to others that it claims for itself, for as Lincoln said: ‘They that do not grant liborbv f^-^^' UGWU! uiy 01 it for themselves, and under a just God cannot long retain it. 1 I believe that every soul born on to this planet has a right to go to any part of it or live upon any part of it, where that soul can live best and serve best.” □ That’s pretty plain talk, but it’s just like old man Jones to say what he thinks and he has said it. Nobody doubts his sincerity and honesty of purpose though a vas* majority of Americans will deplore his judgment in this case. After all is said it is refreshing to find a man who owes his suc cess in fife to his friendship for labor with courage enough about him to advocate a measure that organized labor opposes as a unit. Mayor. Jones’ judgment may be at fault but his nerve is admira ble. —Booker Washington found business booming in Springfield, Mass. The hotels were so “over- crowded” that he had to put up at «-hybrid hashery. — King Edward’s crown will, it is said, be set with 3,000 diamonds. Why doesn’t he simply buy an electric headlight at once and be done with it? — A former real estate dealer of New Jersey, found guilty of swindling, has been sentenced to servitude for seven years and to pay a fine of $1,000,000. The Greensboro Record says: A telegram was received from High Point this morning by Chief of Police W. A. Scott telling him to look out for and arrest four negroes charged with breaking into a store last night at High Point and stealing some shoes, caps, etc. Mr. Scott began a search imme diately and he and Officer Barner went out to the coal chuteAnd met an incoming freight train, which stopped there to coal the engine. As the train slacked its speed the four negroes, who beat a ride here from High Point, jumped off, and three of them were nabbed by the officers, who brought them down street and committed them to j«l. The fourth man, was some lance from ths officers when train stopped, and he hit the and escaped capture. dis- the gril D. Of Benefit to You. S.
